Archival August: Paul Poiret

Parisian Paul Poiret was one of the greatest visionary artists of the early 20th century. He called himself the “king of fashion” and others dubbed him the “Pasha of Paris.” Strongly influenced by orientalist and neoclassical styles, this French fashion designer helped do away with the confining corset and introduced hobble skirts and harem pantaloons.

Poiret had a lowly start, being born to a cloth merchant in the poor French city, Les Halles. To help support his family, Poiret was sent to work with an umbrella maker. Although the work wasn’t very good, Poiret used to opportunity to express his creativity. He collected silk scraps from the umbrellas and made clothes for his sisters’ dolls. He even sketched out designs of dresses and capes.

MT#4: Secrets of a Bargain Hunter

Love shopping at Ross and Marshalls? Here are some tips for the best steals and deals from RossStores.com!

The Treasure-Hunt:

Shopping off-price is a treasure hunt – try not to limit the experience by being too specific. Sometimes we get great deals on items that do not go to all stores. If you go looking for a specific item, you may not find it. Keep an open mind and your flexibility will pay off.

Shop Often:

The number one way to discover the best deals is to come often. Shipments arrive at our stores 3 to 6 times a week. At Ross there’s always something new.

Early Bird Catches the Deal:

Stores get busier as the day goes on so shop as close to opening time as possible to avoid “competition.”

Snatch It Up:

If you see something you like, buy it. More than likely, it won’t be there when you come back.

Buddy System:

Bring a friend. Another set of eyes increases your chance to spot a bargain.

Going, Going, Gone:

Shop clearance sections for even bigger savings. Price reductions are taken every week and are marked on the ticket. Look for the red and yellow clearance signs.

Tip:

It’s actually easy to remove those seemingly permanent price tags off a picture frame, vase, etc. Rubbing alcohol, nail polish remover, mineral spirits (a solvent available at hardware stores) or Goo Gone® easily do the trick.

MT#1: The Best Bargain Shopping Guide (Part 1)

This summer is the first time in my life where I have had to provide for myself. With an extremely tight financial situation, it seems like it would be so difficult to buy quality (and even designer) items and be fashionable without spending a large quantity of money. Yet, over the past couple of months, I have found some of the best ways to save a lot of money and still look fantastic! I think now I have mastered the art of bargain shopping! I figured it would be very appropriate to post my findings, tips, and opinions on my blog! The stores that I am going to be reviewing are Forever 21, Wet Seal, H&M, Ross, Marshalls, Kohls, local boutiques and consignment shops. Because I am going to be reviewing so many stores, I am going to break up the Bargain Shopping Guide into three parts. In this post, I am going to write about Forever 21, Wet Seal, and H&M! When I also get a chance, I am going to post images of what I bought from each store, so you can get a better idea of what I am talking about and what to look for. Continue reading
