DIY: OPI Shattered Inspired Nail Polish

Time: 15 minutes
Materials: matte nail polish, black matte nail polish

I absolutely fell in love with OPI’s new Shattered look when I saw Katy Perry’s ad for her new line with the Black Shattered. I wanted to try to do a similar effect with my nails.

I used an awesome gray shade that I bought from Forever 21 and painted several coats of that. Using my black nail polish, I dabbed the brush on my nails, speckling it.

In the end, the overall look was more marbled than shattered. But I still got a lot of compliments and it is an alternate take on OPI’s Shattered.

Update: OPI recently released a Silver Shattered color in their Pirates of the Caribbean collection.

Matte skin with a luminous finish: Keep skin fresh and natural with a hint of foundation and power. (See the Fendi show)
Red lips: Red lips are back again this season, but any red will do! For fun, try berry or wine hues.  (See the Dolce and Gabbana show)
Black liner: Whether it be liquid or pencil, kohl black liner is in.  (See the Gucci show)
No mascara: Shockingly, mascara is out this season! Please, put down the tube and walk away.  (See the Christopher Kane show)
Prominent brows: The darker the better! Just keep it away from Frida Kahlo status.  (See the Narciso Rodriguez show)

Nude nails: Instead of the square cut nails, long, oval shaped nails are the season’s hottest style. Keep them nude with beige, skin-colored polish.
Sharp side-parts: Make a statement with a distinct and edgy side-part like in Tommy Hilfiger’s show.

Chelsea Clinton’s Wedding Dress Deets!

Yesterday, Chelsea Clinton tied the knot with fiance, Marc Mezvinsky, in a silk Vera Wang dress with an embellished belt. At her reception, she wore “a silk tulle Grecian Vera Wang gown with criss cross back and narrow grosgrain black belt.” All of her bridesmaids wore Wang dresses, which were lavender strapless gowns. Her husband wore a Burberry tux and Hilary Clinton wore Oscar de la Renta. Classic choice, Chelsea! And congrats!

Federal Tax on Indoor Tanning

For years, people have ignored the health concerns and warnings on indoor tanning. But now, it seems to be changing because a 10% federal tax has been initiated on indoor tanning. The tax became effective July 1st of this year. Many people feel that it is about time that something has been done to discourage people from increasing their risk for cancer. Dr. Debra Jaliman, a New York dermatologist, says…

I see younger and younger patients with melanomas, which are the deadliest form of skin cancer. We know that indoor tanning increases your chances of getting a melanoma by 75 percent and I do believe that this tax will be a deterrent. But there still needs to be legislation in every state to prevent minors from using these destructive devices.

New Trends: Hairy Fringe and Tie-Dye

With Paris’s Fashion Week now over, there are a lot of new trends that are emerging. The most prevalent of the them are hairy fringe and tie dye.

Hairy Fringe

The fringe seen on the runways is super expensive because of its high quality; Supposedly, it is human-hair-fine. This hair was seen at Dior (pictured right), Givenchy, and Jean-Paul Gaultier (pictured left). A few seasons ago on Project Runway, designer Chris March tried to make human hair happen, but people were disturbed by it.

Tie-Dye

Ports 1961, Calvin Klein, Blumarine, and Proenza Schouler showcased this look in their Spring/Summer 2009-2010 collections. Since then, this trend has taken off and can be seen in everything from bags, scarves, dresses, to even leggings!
